It's about more than last year

Like every annual report, this one needed to reflect on the year just gone and showcase the breadth and quality of the work undertaken. However, it also had a higher calling. Every piece of Arup communication should reflect the firm’s goal of ‘Shaping a better world’. This report was no different.

Shifting the lens

‘Shaping a better world’ is about creating practical, sustainable and inspiring solutions that genuinely improve people’s lives. So the report was written and designed to highlight the value of Arup’s work to the people who experience it. Stories are told from multiple, sometimes surprising, viewpoints – like the fans consulted on the design of their team’s stadium. Meanwhile, images go beyond amazing shots of the finished project. They show them being used and enjoyed.

A bespoke build

We used wiro binding for the report. As well as allowing it to lay flat on the table, it enables the report to incorporate different-sized pages and different materials, inviting the reader to engage with structure, materials and space in the way Arup’s work does. Within the report, there’s coated, uncoated and high-gloss varnish paper, as well as transparent overlays.

Just enough design

Finally, the report was all put together in a way consistent with Arup’s ‘just enough design’ approach. The style is light and functional, with no full bleed imagery to ensure lots of white space. Unusually, there’s no stunning building on the front cover, just lots of white and a bold quote from the firm’s legendary founder, Ove Arup. When it comes Arup, principles lead everything – even their annual report.
